5 days, 35 researchers, 11* countries, 9 practical labs, 4 projects, 3 short talks, 1 masterclass, and 1 keynote. These are just a few numbers from the third edition of SMART Data Sprint, a conference that happened during the Digital Media Winter Institute 2019.

Under the motto “Beyond Visible Engagement”, Data Sprint 2019 was committed to critically approach a key parameter for web platforms studies: engagement. The keynote on “Critical Analytics” by Professor Richard Rogers (University of Amsterdam) and the masterclass gave by Professor Bernhard Rieder (Amsterdam University) “From Algorithms to Diagrams: How to Study Platforms” were high points of the week.

To further empower the projects developed during the week, practical labs on research approaches and software were conducted, such as: Query Desing (with Richard Rogers), Network Analysis with Gephi (with Inês Amaral), “Analyzing Network Data from Facebook with NodeXL Pro” (with Harald Meier), “Visual Content Analysis with ImagePlot” and “Raw Graphs” (with Beatrice Gobbo), “Youtube Data Analysis” (with Ana Marta M. Flores, Cristian Ruiz and Elsa Caetano), “Querying App Stores” (with Janna Joceli Omena), and “Visual Content Analysis with Google Vision API” (with André Mintz).

Different perspectives on engagement were applied to all participating projects of the 2019 edition: Journalism Apps, Health myths’ circulation on social media: the cases of detox therapies and anti-vaxxers, Interrogating Vision APIs and Frugal Innovation.
